Still lifes make up a significant portion of the Dutch and Flemish collection of the Old Masters' Gallery of the Szépmüvészeti Müzeum in Budapest. The assembled works represent almost every sub-genre and development in still-life painting over more than a century starting in the early iöoos. The collection contains works by art-ists of enormous significance, such as Jan Davidsz. de Heem and Abraham van Beijeren. It has lavish bird pieces by Melchior d' Hondecoeter, but also fine and elegant food pieces by Willem van Aelst and Matheus Wytmans. In addition to the usual types - such as flower, fruit and banquet pieces, hunting trophies, and kitchen and pantry interi-ors - pictures of live animals are also included in this volume. The modern viewer may feel that these do not belong to the genre, but for contem-porary collectors they served to record the beauty and curiosity of nature in the same way as, for ex-ample, flower still lifes.

Scholarly interest in still-life painting intensified around the beginning of the twentieth century. Comprehensive works dealing with the development, definition and history of the genre, as well as monographs and catalogues, have acquainted the public with an increasing number of paintings and artists. In addition, iconographic studies have revealed the 'messages' that still lifes conveyed to the contemporary viewer. The present volume seeks to present and discuss, on the basis of the current state of research, the Dutch and Flemish still life collection of the Szépmüvészeti Müzeum, and in this way to provide new perspectives and discoveries.

This critical catalogue was the result of intensive collaboration between eminent Hungarian art historians and the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie in The Hague.
