This highly important catalogue raisonné and its companion volume on still lifes are the result of a long-term project that was initiated in the mid-1980S with a grant from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. From the beginning the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie (rkd) in The Hague was involved, at first in the form of friendly support. In 1992 cooperation on the Dutch and Flemish volumes of the critical catalogue of the Budapest Museum became part of its official program.

The collection of Dutch Old Master paintings in the Szépmüvészeti Müzeum in Budapest is one of the largest of its kind in the world outside the Netherlands and Belgium. Seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Dutch and Flemish portraits constitute a prominent part of this extensive collection. Apart from works by celebrated masters such as Frans Hals, Johannes Verspronck, Bartholomeus van der Helst, Nicolaes Maes, Jan Lievens, and Adriaen van der Werff, it includes excellent pieces by lesser-kown painters. Some of the paintings presented in this catalogue have never been displayed. The types of likenesses range from independent portraits, pendants of couples, children's portraits and group portraits to specific genres such as the portrait historié (in which the sitter assumes the role of a biblical, mythological or historical figure) and the pastoral portrait.

In recent decades, portraiture has received much scholarly attention and research has brought about stimulating and thought-provoking results. This volume presents the first systematic survey of the Netherlandish portraits in the Szépmüvészeti Müzeum in the light of current findings.
