The Polder Atlas of The Netherlands is a monument to The Netherlands as the polder land. The impressive wealth of forms in the polder landscape is dazzlingly depicted in this atlas in over 300 aerial photographs, maps and drawings.
 
The more than 9000 polder units that comprise the Dutch low lands are systematically catalogued here for the first time. All the polders are represented on thirty-five map pages, with their characteristic hydraulic and spatial qualities. These polder entities are named in a comprehensive index, and can be located on the map pages by their coordinates. Seventeen specimen polders, including famous historic polders such as the Beemster and the Schermer, lesser-known entities such as the Bethune and Tzummer polders, and brand new polders such as the Noordoostpolder and South Flevoland, are discussed in detail and analysed, in part with the aid of plans and drawings.
 
Landscape architecture is also central to this atlas: the creative labour performed by Dutch through the centuries to turn back the water and make the new land obtained by the building of dikes, draining of lakes and reclamation of peat bogs into a habitable and characteristic agricultural landscape.
 
The Polder Atlas of The Netherlands is a unique and valuable source both for the understanding of the exceptional Dutch polder landscape and for planning its further development.
