Balancing fundamental rights with the EU treaty freedoms

the European court of justice as `tightrope` walker

Prijs Euro 29.00

Fundamental rights protection in the European Union is nowadays at the heart of academic debate amongst EU lawyers and academia. This is not strange as the ongoing development of fundamental rights and principles within the EU legal order has - at least for the time being - come to a climax through the adoption of the Treaty of Lisbon. Article 6 of the EU Treaty now recognizes the binding force of the Charter of Fundamental Rights, embraces the intention to accede to the European Convention on the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms and codifies the European Court of Justice`s case law that fundamental rights shall constitute general principles of Union law. But the protection of fundamental rights may come into conflict with the fundamental Treaty freedoms, which have been vital in building Europe`s economic constitution.

Meanwhile the European Court of Justice, being increasingly confronted with questions as to the scope of fundamental rights and their relationship with `the fundamental Treaty freedoms`, such as the free movement of goods or services, has had to engage itself in a delicate balancing exercise.

The aim of this book is precisely to address the anxious relationship between fundamental rights and the fundamental Treaty freedoms within the context of EU law. The immediate cause for the publication of this book is the `Europa Institute lecture` of Sybe de Vries (Utrecht University) held in Utrecht on 17 November 2010 with a critical reflection by Xavier Groussot from the University of Lund (Sweden).

Series editors: Ton van den Brink, Anna Gerbrandy and Sybe de Vries.

Lennart Nilsson

Life

Prijs van Euro 46.95 voor Euro 44.60

Lennart Nilsson is the world's leading scientific photographer. His background was that of a photojournalist. His great emphasis is on the sense of a story. His work is also that of an artist, which makes him unique.

This story, illustrated in Life, is the ultimate story - a visual account of human development, from Dna to stem cells. The photographs are reproduced at the highest quality as a single epic sequence. After the first publication of Lennart Nilsson's photographs of human embryos in 1965 he published the essential book for the general reader on human birth, A Child is Born. This is probably the most successful illustrated book in history and as many as 50 million copies have been sold worldwide. Birth is not the conclusion of the book, but the centre of it.

The first part will include studies of hormones, conception and embryonic development. The second part of the book will include the growth of body organs and tissues, viruses, cancer and studies of atmospheric particles. Perhaps no studies of human development have been as important since those of Leonardo da Vinci at the end of the fifteenth century. The afterword will be written by Hans Wigzell, Head of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm and chairman of the board to award the Nobel Prize for Medicine, who has worked with Lennart Nilsson for more than twenty years. The format of the book is based on Full Moon, published in 1999 to mark the thirtieth anniversary of the landing of the Apollo astronauts on the Moon. Life will be published to coincide with an exhibition organised for the centenary of Hasselblad in Sweden which will be held in conjunction with an exhibition of Full Moon under the title Inner and Outer Space.

The Logic of the Spirit

Human Development in Theological Perspective

Prijs van Euro 35.95 voor Euro 34.15

A Profound and Insightful Interpretation of the Human Spirit and its Impact on Human DevelopmentIn this deep and enlightening discussion, psychologist and theologian James E. Loder demonstrates how a theological perspective enlarges our understanding of how humans grow and develop from birth through the life span. "What is a lifetime," he asks, "in a vast, apparently empty universe . . . when time and space so far outreach our grasp?" In exploring this question, Loder examines the intimate relationship between human nature and the divine and provides moving case studies, bringing the work of psychologists Freud, Erikson, and Piaget to that of seminal Christian theologians Kierkegaard, Barth, Torrance, and Pannenberg. Loder acknowledges that psychological stage theories enable us to understand the logic of humans evolving relationship with the world and with God. At the same time, he demonstrates that the divine spirit has a logic of its own, which is not bound by stages, and which reveals "patterns of ultimate significance in the transient, fleeting moments we call a human lifetime." Seminarians, theologians, ministers, and pastoral counselors will benefit from this rich, thought provoking guide."James Loder combines an uncommon intelligence with the compassion of an extraordinary therapist. Those . . . prepared to grapple with science, social science, and Christian theology, will find [this book] important, thought provoking, and rewarding."—Sharon Daloz Parks, Whidbey Institute, co author, Common Fire: Leading Lives of Commitment in a Complex World "A masterful interdisciplinary work. . . an insightful and engaging contribution for reflective practitioners in . . . fields concerned with formation and transformation, such as Christian education, counseling, mentoring, youth ministry, and spiritual direction."—Daniel S. Schipani, Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary "In a profound and unique synthesis of postmodern science and theology, Jim

Digital Ego

Social and Legal Aspects of Virtual Identity

Prijs Euro 17.50

Non-human virtual identities have an increasing impact on our society. A virtual identity is not just an online identity of a person, but a new technical and social phenomenon. What if software agents, powered by artificial intelligence, start acting on your behalf in a digital marketplace? What are the legal consequences of decisions made by these autonomous virtual agents?

Digital Ego counters the common belief that a virtual identity is only a temporary and innocent phenomenon, which disappears when a computer is switched off. Influenced by markets, politics and culture, cyberspace is becoming a highly regulated world where, compared to our tangible world, behaviour will be much more tightly controlled. The author addresses a broad range of social and legal aspects of virtual identities, such as the position of virtual environments in real world legal systems, and the difference between virtual and real identities.

Jacob van Kokswijk is a communications expert. He has written several books and articles about digital interactive media, user controlled technologies, cross media development and human behaviour in cyberspace. He is Adjunct Professor HCI at KAIST Graduate School of Culture Technology (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology). Jacob is also a Research Professor in digital media at the Dutch Twente University , and is currently researching the phenomenon of Virtual Identities at the Law School of the Faculty of Law, Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Strathclyde.

Appreciative Inquiry

Change at the Speed of Imagination

Prijs Euro 55.14

Appreciative Inquiry a book in the Practicing OD Series is for leaders and organizational consultants who are ready to abandon the familiar tyranny of complex change programs. Recognizing that human systems are constructions of the human imagination and therefore capable of change at the speed of imagination, the Appreciative Inquiry (AI) process frees organizations from the restrictive orthodoxy of "deficit based change" and allows them the freedom to mobilize strategic change and focus on the visible and tacit strengths of an organization. AI is capable of engaging whole systems at amazing scales? easily engaging hundreds or sometimes thousands of people, and often, in a matter of weeks or days, to leverage the positive core of the organization.

The authors reveal how using the Appreciative Inquiry (AI) process can help you discover and tap rich, inspiring "high point" accounts of personal or collective capacity and link this "positive core" to any change agenda. Once you have determined what is really working, transformations never thought possible are rapidly and democratically mobilized.

This innovative process can be an effective way to work with organizations as organic systems whose success depends on a holistic approach to the connected human, technical, and organizational functions that make up any organization. Readers learn about the shifting paradigm in which we work and the role AI can play in enabling organizations to embrace the new paradigm. And, with case studies from such organizations as McDonald s, NASA, British Airways, and others, they illustrate the emerging applications of AI in a wide range of environments.

"This is a book about the future of organization development. It is a practical guide to Appreciative Inquiry for organization leaders and organization development professionals and it is a comprehensive explanation at the speed of imagination." Peter Sorensen, professor and director of the Ph.D. program in organization development and master of science program in management and organization behavior, Benedictine University
