      Children of Holland

The Image of the Netherlands in American Children's books

      Prijs Euro 10.95

Children of Holland deals with the image of the Netherlands in American children's books. Using a wealth of illustrations Saskia de Bodt describes the various aspects of this 'picture of Holland' that was spread chiefly by the famous book by Mary Mapes Dodge, Hans Brinker, but not only by this book. About 1880 there developed in America a rage for everything Dutch, 'Holland mania'. Recurring themes in the numerous children's books are the past 9the history of democratic, middle class Hooland), the lives of the Dutch colonists in Americam and of course, all that was seen as 'characteristic' of the little land by the sea where everyone seemed to go around in regional costumes. In 1940 we see an important turning point: the peaceful, unspoiled little country was threatened by was.
