De schrijver van dit beknopte en populair gehouden werkje over de wijsgeren en hun denkarbeid gedurende de laatste anderhalve eeuw zou graag willen bereiken dat menigeen zich daarover een ander idee zou vormen! Wanneer een radiospreker in twaalf voordrachten, zoals die hier voor de druk zijn bewerkt, Hegel, Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Bergson, Dewey, Croce, Nic. Hartmann, Russell, Jaspers, Sarte en Heidegger behandelt, kan men geen diepgaande uiteenzetting verwachten. Maar zeker is het niet te veel gezegd, dat het hem uitstekend gelukt is in dit twaalftal levensschetsen een aantrekkelijk en boeiend beeld te geven van de wereld van het denken, zoals die in deze figuren is belichaamd en in anderen die zijdelings mede ter sprake komen. Het boek pretendeert niet het alle lezers mogelijk te maken nu volledig terzake kundig mee te spreken over de wijsgerige problemen – daarvoor heeft men een studie van vele jaren nodig. Maar wel slaagt het erin ook aan lezers zonder verdere vooropleiding een indruk te geven van wat er in die wereld van de wijsbegeerte omgaat en wat het grote belang daarvan is, ook voor degenen die op een eerbiedige afstand van het "vak" blijven.
