In het Friese dorp Achlum slaat een kleine groep boeren en notabelen in 1811 de handen ineen om zich te verzekeren tegen de financiële risico’s van brand. Daarmee legden zij de grondslag van het bedrijf dat inmiddels Nederlands grootste verzekeringsmaatschappij is.
In de 19de eeuw krijgt het voorbeeld van Achlum in Nederland veel navolging: onderlinge en coöperatieve verzekeraars gaan gezamenlijk de risico’s dragen van brand, hagel- en stormschade, ziekte en ongevallen. Gemene deler achter alle initiatieven is de wens om zelf verantwoordelijkheid te nemen en een financieel vangnet te vormen; zonder inmenging van de overheid en als tegenwicht van commerciële verzekeraars. Naast de Friese onderlingen komen er ook katholieke boerenverzekeringen in het zuiden en plaatselijke ziekenfondsen voor arbeiders in grotere steden. Daarnaast verzekeren werkgevers zich collectief tegen bedrijfsrisico’s waaraan hun personeel blootstaat. Van Achlum naar Achmea laat op aansprekende wijze zien hoe zich uit dat veelkleurige landschap geleidelijk een aantal grotere verzekeraars op coöperatieve grondslag ontwikkelde, zoals Avéro, Centraal Beheer, Interpolis en Zilveren Kruis. Deze kwamen uiteindelijk samen in Achmea: een sterk coöperatief verzekeringsconcern, dat met een bijzondere bedrijfsfilosofie actief is op de Nederlandse en – als onderdeel van Eureko – de Europese markt. Ook na twee eeuwen heeft de maatschappelijke taak van Achmea nog niets aan kracht ingeboet. Het bedrijf koestert haar coöperatieve wortels als identiteitsbewijs en inspiratiebron.
